Mr Krabbs

The forums are very quiet

The Global FlyFisher forum has existed for almost as long as the site, and the oldest posts are more than 20 years old. Forums aren't what they used to be. Social media has taken over a lot of their roles, and the GFF form is very quiet ... to put it mildly.
We keep everything online for the sake of history, and preserve the posts for as long as possible, but as you will see, quite a few of them aren't in a good shape, but rely on old images hosted elsewhere, which are no longer available, odd codes from old systems and much more, which can't be shown in a decent way.
But the posts are here, and you can - if you insist - start new threads. But don't stay awake waiting for replies, because they are unfortunately few and far apart.

I've tied crab patterns before but they never seem to swim the right way up, so now I'm hoping I've cracked it with this pattern. It has a split shot glued Clouser style to the hook shank to make it swim point up. Anyway hope you like it :)

Cheers Dave

Hook: Sakuma 410 2/0 with split shot glued to shank
Shell: Brown Furry Foam
Legs: Craft Foam cut into strips heat bent and coloured
Eyes: Nylon Braid dipped in UV Gel and coloured black nail varnish
Mouth Palps: CDC
Claws: Cheap brown hackle trimmed and stiffened with SH

In the pic above you can just see the split shot, coloured green.

David,

Very nice looking fly!

The key to get a fly to ride hook point up is not always weight, but rather a "sail" or "rudder", which points up. The wing on a Crazy Charlie or Gotcha it a good example.

This will act as a guide to the fly as it sinks, much like the tail on a kite in the wind. So making sure your flies aren't flat, but has most of its extensions - like the crab claws and legs - pointing upwards, might do the trick.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
